About the Item

This stunning portrait of Caroline is by Jean Gabriel Domergue (1889-1962). It was painted circa 1950. Oil on hardboard. It has a great dimension 65 x 54cm, Signed bottom right. Titled on the reverse "Caroline". It is sold with a certificate by M. Noé Willer (dated October 2018) - see attached photo - who is the best expert for Domergue. As specified on the certificate, this paining will be included in the descriptive catalogue ("catalogue raisonné") of Domergue which is in preparation by Mr Noé Willer. Domergue being a very sought after artist there are many dubious/questionable works on the market so this certificate is the best guarantee that you acquire an authentic painting by Domergue. Dimension: Without frame: 65 x 54cm With frame: 86 x 75cm J-G Domergue biography (by Artnet): "Jean-Gabriel Domergue was a French painter often described as “the inventor of the pin-up” for his wide-eyed, slender-necked portraits of Parisian women from the 1920s. He was born on March 4, 1889 in Bordeaux, France and studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. At the age of 17, he exhibited works at the Salon des Artistes Français and in 1920, was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome. Though he started his career as a painter of landscapes, by the 1920s he devoted himself entirely to portraits of women... He was a sought-after portraitist in aristocratic circles and also worked as a designer for notable couturiers, including Paul Poiret and Henry Marque. In 1955, Domergue was appointed curator at the Jacquemart-André Museum in Paris, and was later named a Knight of the Legion of Honor and Fellow of the Academy of Fine Arts. He died November 16, 1962 in Paris, France.".
