About the Item

Painting, oil on canvas, with dimensions of 92 x 77 without frame and 107 x 82 cm with frame, depicting a Saint Gerolamo in the ancient philosopher and ascetic version, typical of the greatest tradition of the Neapolitan baroque of the mid-seventeenth century; the painting is undoubtedly a work of great quality and artistic sensitivity of the painter Francesco Fracanzano (Monopoli 1612-Naples 1656). Here represented there is one of the subjects most dear to the artist or the representation of half figures of saints or philosophers investigated with raw realism; here we also see the predilection of our artist for a more polished pictorial body, more softly shaped and more vibrant. The compositional scheme of this work faithfully reflects the precepts of the era with an almost frontal layout of the figure and with the light conceived in the narrow Caravaggesque tradition, with a light source coming from the left, which brings out both the noble head and the very accurate hands against a dark background, faded to the right in a lighter glow; here we can easily notice the inclination and the desire of the artist to capture in the portrait the character of the character and the attention to an emotional and sentimental rendering of the image through a painting, which exudes a profound humanity and a great moral strength without ever arrive at a decorative formalism, endowed with both great naturalism and realism and a strong religious spirit and an intimate and sorrowful participation for a humanity marked by age and suffering. Analyzing some details of the work such as the epidermic beauty of the pictorial material on the wrinkled forehead and the refined definition of the complexion and the superbly painted hands compared to the humble clothing we can even direct the work around the 40s of the seventeenth century. When Francesco Fracanzano embarks on the path of a more observant realism typical of his great teacher and mentor Jusepe de Ribera, even though new chromatic turns can be glimpsed far from his youth when naturalistic rigor yields to the flattery of a more tender and refined pictorial palette as reveals the most accurate conduct of the various veils of this painting. I can add that the authorship of this work to Francesco Fracanzano does not reside only in the drafting of the work, in its colors and in its representation, but it is confirmed in numerous works by the artist himself, where however his imprint is known. We can rediscover the same artistic sense present here in other works of the same painter as The Return of the Prodigal Son, Lot and the daughters found in the Cathedral of Monopoli, the Baccanale of the Cambridge Fogg art museum, the Silent Ebbro present at the Prado museum in Madrid and the Ecce Homo now in the Morton B. Harris collection in New York.
