"Sailor in Repose, " Mid Century Watercolor w/ Male Nude by Emlen Etting
About the Item
Provocative and unapologetic, this watercolor depiction of a fully nude sailor sprawled across his bed, his uniform and cap neatly laid on a chair to one side, was painted by Emlen Etting, a Philadelphia painter who hobnobbed with society but also loved to consort with sailors and denizens of the night. One of the finest and most striking of many paintings depicting the sailors Etting had met, in this case the artist drew the image in pencil, and added a layer of watercolor in broad strokes across the nude figure, making it at once modern and traditional. Etting exhibited, over a long lifetime of painting, in more than 30 one-man and multiple-artist shows in Philadelphia, New York, Paris and elsewhere. He traveled in a prestigious circle of artists, writers and wealthy clients, and his works were purchased by museums and collectors such as Walter Annenberg, Helen Hayes, Mary Clark Rockefeller.
