"Rower, " Large and Rare Art Deco Painting of Oarsman for Mosaic Urn in Bordeaux

About the Item

An iconic and splendid example of high style Art Deco painting by René Buthaud, one of the French masters, this stylized depiction of a rower were made in preparation for the creation of four, 12-foot high monumental mosaic urns for the Stade du Parc Lescure in Bordeaux. The stadium, originally built for cycling competitions, was reconfigured in 1936-1938 for the FIFA soccer world championships, and was the first stadium in the world without any columns that would obstruct the visibility of the field. Buthaud was perhaps the world's leading sculptor working largely with ceramics in the 1920s and 1930s, he had a strong association with Bordeaux, working as a jewelry engraver there in his youth. Two other examples of Buthaud's preparatory paintings for the stadium are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. (Dimensions include matte and frame; dimensions of visible drawing are 24.25 inches high by 18.25 inches wide.)
