Rookwood Pottery Hand Painted Vellum Glaze Scenic Plaque by E.T. Hurley

This Classic Rookwood vellum glaze scenic plaque was painted by well listed artist E.T. Hurley in 1945 and is housed in its original wood frame. The plaque features groupings of silvery birch trees growing around a small pond along with a footpath which winds through the woods on the left. The leaves on the birch trees are just starting to turn, suggesting an autumn time frame. The image includes green bushes growing at the far end of the pond along with a dense stand of bluish-gray trees which are visible in the distance. The colors of the vegetation are reflected in the calm, mirror-like surface of the water, as is the diffused light in the sky which is characteristic of early morning or twilight. As seen in the accompanying photographs the artwork has a tonalist quality with soft contours which give the piece an atmospheric misty appearance. The artwork has been signed by the artist at the lower left. The back of the plaque carries its original pricing information which is inscribed in grease pencil, part of which is visible through the small aperture present in the backing materials. The aperture reveals the impressed Rookwood flame logo, the year of production "XLV" in Roman numerals, and the "9 x 12" dimensions of the plaque. As noted above, the plaque is housed in its original wood frame and retains its Suders Art Store label on the back. It should be noted that the backing materials installed by Suders at the time of framing were carefully removed so the piece could be examined outside of the frame. All of the original materials were retained and reattached after examination. The plaque was then secured within the frame by virtue of a series of new removable metal clips. This E.T. Hurley plaque displays beautifully and would be a wonderful addition to a collection of Rookwood or works equally well showcased on its own. A truly lovely object with timeless appeal.
