"Resting," Art Deco Masterpiece Painting by Rigal, Waldorf Astoria Muralist

One of the most important Art Deco paintings we have ever offered, "Resting" (or "Nu Incliné" in France), was painted by Louis Pierre Rigal in 1925, the same year he painted murals for the famed Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris (which later gave the "Art Deco" style its name). Rigal was a major figure in the Art Deco movement, painting important murals in France and in America, including ceiling murals for the Palmer House in Chicago. He also painted a series of murals and designed a monumental floor mosaic for the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, recently designated an interior landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. In 1925, Rigal painted this group of female nudes, the primary figure to the right resting on an incline, as the French would say it, which was exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais that year. Rigal's palette here is remarkable -- the pale skin tones of the nudes contrasting with the rich, luscious reds of the fruits at their feet. The medium is oil on canvas.
