Portrait “Ladies on a Landscape” Oil on Canvas, Signed and Dated 1920

Portrait. “Ladies on a landscape”. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated (1920). Nieto, Anselmo Miguel (Valladolid, 1881-Madrid, 1964). Anselmo Miguel Nieto was a Spanish painter very popular nationally and internationally until the Spanish Civil War, moment from which his work has been somewhat forgotten. It stood out in the genre of the portrait, especially female, showing influences of Zurbarán, Romero de Torres, Joaquín Sorolla, etc. From humble parents and without artists in his family, he leaves Valladolid for training at the Superior School of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he studies with professors Alejo Vera and José Moreno Carbonero and has as partners the Zubiaurre, López Mezquita and Eugenio Hermoso. He obtains, first, a pension in Rome to expand his training and, in 1903, another one for Paris, where he is two years old. In this time he meets his friend for life, the painter Aurelio Arteta, and Pablo Picasso. In 1906 he moved to Madrid, frequenting artistic gatherings at the beginning and getting to know great names such as the Baroja, Valle-Inclán (it is worth highlighting his portrait), Francisco de Cossío, etc. His national recognition (Gold Medal at the Barcelona International Art Exhibition in 1911 ...) is followed by the international one, which comes from the Gold Medal at the International Exposition in Buenos Aires (1910) and the one in Munich (1913). In 1922 he left with Julio Romero de Torres to Argentina and Chile, returning to Spain in 1946. From this moment, however, his fame does not return to what it was. Despite this, he was named Academician of San Fernando in 1952 (the painter always refused to the official reception). He remained in Ibiza between 1933 and 1936, finding some relief from his tormented moments, and between 1947 and 1949. In this year he returned to Madrid, where he died in Madrid in 1952. His style evolved from an expressionist realism to a modernism of rich luminosity and colorism. He interpreted his portraits in an allegorical and sensual sense (following the line of masters such as Romero de Torres or Zuloaga). They emphasize its luminosity and its looseness of invoice, together with a vigorous realistic detail. His work could be seen in numerous exhibitions (Missouri, Munich, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, etc.), and is preserved in numerous private collections, and in institutions such as the National Museum of Theater, the National Museum of Fine Arts of Buenos Aires, the Academy of Fine Arts of the Purísima Concepción de Valladolid, etc. The present painting shows a particular combination between the two figures portrayed and the mountainous landscape of the background. The lady in black sitting and the young woman, in white dress, show strength in the master's usual drawing, comparable with several portraits of bourgeois ladies kept in private collections in Madrid and Valladolid. Note the expressiveness achieved with the gestures of the faces and with the position of the figures, which almost seems to tell a story related to the grief and mourning of the lady and the support of the girl. The landscape background (in which only the presence of a bridge towards the center refers to human intervention), which stands out for its light and its brushstroke and chromatic combination, is more reminiscent of masterpieces such as the portrait of Concha Lagos made in 1954, or that of Anita Delgado from 1905, showing influences of other contemporary painters and currents to the time. Measures: canvas 163 x 150 cms. (Depth is orientative).
