Pair of French Empire Portraits of an Aristocratic Couple by Antoine Borel

About the Item

A pair of original oil paintings on canvas depicting a handsome young aristocratic couple of the Directoire, early Empire period. They are each pictured from the waist up, she holding a red shawl over and around her arms; the background a dark cloudy landscape. Both are relined, signed Borel and dated 1819. The portraits have their original carved and gilded Empire frames with anthemian (palmette) borders. The artist was born in 1777 and died in 1838 in Besancon France where he served as the Director of the School of Design. He is listed in the E. Benizet catalogue as primarily a miniaturist and oil paintings of his are extremely rare. The Museum of Besacon has two miniature portraits painted by the artist including a self portrait.
