About the Item

19th century British School pair of wooded landscape paintings In oil on canvas, each signed lower right "G.A. Turner 1843" Item # 007MLE30P A good pair of British School paintings by artist G.A. Turner, both are signed in the same script and dated together 1843, suggesting they were intended to be presented as a pair even from conception. They present beautifully in this manner, the cohesion of the scene even suggesting they may be presenting different angles on the same pool of water. The sky overhead is smooth with wispy cloud cover while beautifully detailed foliage of the sparse trees cast shadows over the pool of water. In one scene, a mother and her child walk along a dirt path under the cover of the trees while in the other a British gentleman - perhaps a soldier in his brilliant red garb - takes a pause to look over the landscape. These are a gorgeous and early pair of paintings that would be a pleasing addition to any home with an English Country aesthetic. The artist G.A. Turner is an unknown artist for the most part. He presented three works at the Royal Academy: Two Gentlemen of Verona (1836), Vide Woodstock (1838), The Clipper (1841); and presented at the British Institution "Interior of a Farmer's Stable at Eltham" (1839). He is also recorded to have presented two works at Suffolk Street Galleries. Often confused with George Turner, the works of G.A. Turner are of a more decorative nature and generally depict landscapes and peasant genre images. Both frames later than the paintings. Both paintings relined on linen. Surfaces in excellent condition with very minor craquelure. Very minor surface grime/yellowing, they present beautifully without requiring conservation at this time. Under UV examination the paintings appear to be free of any noteworthy restoration.
