Superbly conceived and executed in very fine detail, this Art Deco painting of a nude black male figure amidst a lush, tropical setting, with an African mask peeking out from the foliage, was executed by Milton Martin in the 1930s. It is possible that the image depicts an African figure, or a scene that is meant to suggest the origins of Black America in Africa. Executed in gouache, this image may have been created as an illustration for a book or magazine. (Dimensions include matte and frame.)
