GLYPHS on Encyclopedia Pages, Part 2 by Cheryl R. Riley

US$3,500per set

About

For approximately three decades, the “Glyphs” were simply shapes Cheryl integrated into wall art and site-specific mural commissions. During an artist residency at Oxbow in the Fall of 2018, they evolved into a visual vocabulary exploration of language as a reflection of societal character and structure. She expanded their meaning by learning about matriarchal and matrilineal societies after being told that after every war, the highest fatalities are among women and children. With this knowledge, the transformation started of these shapes into an Afro Futurist visual vocabulary. She now views the Glyphs as the language of an imagined, advanced extra-terrestrial, matriarchal, matrilineal, agrarian and peaceful civilization. The work is painted, unique iterations on pages of a 1957 encyclopedia using gouache and metallic ink or on archival paper in indigo gouache and silver ink. When choosing a page to paint, Cheryl does not consider or focus on the text or definitions in the encyclopedia, she only chooses those which do not incorporate distracting images. Recently, while removing pages from the bindings, a discovery arose; every portrait with a name was of a White male and all others of different races or countries were identified by their actions—“a weaver from Mali”, for example. The Glyphs have taken on an additional resonance for Cheryl as an even more vibrant superimposition over the culture. *Please note that pieces are unframed. **May also be sold in two groups 14 for $1400 or 21 for $2100.
