Francis E Jamieson Scottish, 1895-1950 "Extensive River Landscape" Oil on canvas Signed ‘F.E. Jamieson’ lower right 20 by 30 in. w/frame 26 ¼ by 36 ¼ in. Francis E Jamieson was most notably known for his enchanting landscapes of the Scottish Highlands and Loch mountains. He became one of the most sought after and prolific artists of his time. Jamieson never exhibited in London as he sold his work through several dealers. He was in such demand that he was exclusively contracted to prestigious furniture retailers, and was known to have produced works for private clients using eleven known pseudonyms which included Aubrey Ramus, W.Richards, Montgomery Ansell, and Phil Hips. His beach scenes were published as postcards around 1920 by G.Ajelli &Co of London, on a textured card to give the appearance of an oil. He is known to have travelled widely in the South of England between the wars selling his work. He was a short, thick set man, who would turn up in his trade-mark plus fours. This atmospheric highland scene is typical of Jamieson's work. His warm, bright colors and compositions are very much in the style made popular by Alfred de Breanski and his son. The Victorian hankering for Scotland has never disappeared, and these artists pleasingly evoke the mountains and lochs north of the border. Perhaps his favorite painting place was Loch Katrine, in the Trossachs.
