About the Item

A large and striking oil on canvas of a stately home interior scene by listed German painter Ernst Kolbe (1876-1945). The painting, which has an impressionist feel, is crammed with detail and intrigue. We are stood in a room with the most spectacular mural, depicting a classical scene and with an inviting embroidered Louis XV style chair in the corner. The door is ajar and we can glimpse a brightly lit, colorful second room or hallway with chandelier and red velvet side chair, another room beyond, perhaps with a cabriole gilded console and mirror above. I really like the way that the mural in the first room somehow, though impressive, plays second fiddle to the rooms beyond, our attention is immediately enticed to the possibilities of what lies through the open door, Late 19th-early 20th century. The canvas has been relined and it is in a large decorative gilt style frame, contemporary to the painting. Signed by the artist. Measures: H 94 cm, W 100 cm, D 11cm Canvas 69cm x 75cm “Ernst Kolbe was a German artist best known for his paintings and lithographic prints of scenes in Germany. His works are painted with wide, visible brushstrokes, giving his work an impressionistic quality. Born on January 9, 1876 in Marienwerder, West Prussia, Kolbe studied painting at the Berlin Academy of Art, and later worked as an apprentice to German painter Eugen Bracht in Dresden. Kolbe returned to Berlin in 1906, where he joined the Association of Berlin Artists, a union of prominent German painters and sculptors. During World War II, the artist's studio and many of his remaining works were destroyed in an air raid and he was forced to halt his artistic career. Kolbe died on July 17, 1945 in Rathenow, Germany. Today, his works can be found in the collection of the Kolbe Museum in Berlin.” (Taken from Artnet).
