Elegant Ladies on the Terrace by D. Enjolras

Signed D. Enjolras Measures: With frame, height 86.5 cm (34 in.), width 99 cm (38.9 in.) Without frame: Height 59 cm (23.2 in.), width 71 cm (27.9 in.) Charming genre scene depicting three young ladies, in the evening, on a terrace by a lake. Characteristic of his production inspired by the Belle Époque, this painting with a delicate touch in warm shades of orange, pink and blue represents one of the topics that has most inspired the painter throughout his career: the feminine portrait. The unique source of light on the left of the canvas, creating a clair-obscur, gives an intimate atmosphere to the scene. Beginning his career by depicting landscapes, D. Enjolras then uses his mastery of pastel to represent feminine grace. Young ladies are often depicted with daily occupations like having tea, sewing, reading, playing music, in intimate cozy interiors, or on an illuminated terrace by the lake. Having lived in the South of France, the painter may have been inspired by the Mediterranean landscapes that he had in front of him. Changing the number of characters and the brightness, these scenes of elegant young ladies by the lake are one of the most represented themes by Delphin Enjolras. Delphin Enjolras, born in Courcouron in 1857, dead in Toulouse in 1945, was the student of the watercolorist Gaston Gérard at the Drawing School of the City of Paris then had for masters Jean-Léon Gérôme, Gustave Courtois and Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret at the National School of Fine Arts of Paris. His portrait of the prefect Bonnefoy Sibour, made in Corse, allows him to expose since 1889 at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, until 1909. Genre painter mastering gouache, watercolor as well as pastel, he specializes in the gracious representation of women in intimacy, alone or in group, and illuminated by the light of fire or a lamp, which will earn him the nickname of « painter of reflections ». Exposing at the Salon, he becomes member of the Society of the French Artists in 1901. He will receive the academic palms from the Minister of Fine Arts for his painting « La mort de Dupleix », bought by the State.
