"Carnival in Manchester, " Atmospheric, WPA-Era Painting with Carousel by Gernand

About the Item

A celebration of 1930s America, full of atmosphere and color, this painting by John Gernand depicts a carnival in Manchester, New Hampshire, including a carousel, Ferris wheel, tents, and colorful posters beckoning to passers-by. Gernand was one of Duncan Phillip's favourite American painters, and Gernand's "Circus" painting in the Phillips Collection is strongly reminiscent of "Carnival in Manchester" in its evocation of early 20th century American life. The painter lived and worked in the Virginia and Washington, D.C. areas, and exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery. The medium is oil on canvas. (Dimensions include original frame).
