About
Born in London in 1795, John Frederick Herring is a precocious, self-taught artist who demonstrated a great interest in sketching and drawing horse races. The young artist made his talent recognized by wealthy customers and began his career as a painter of hunting scenes for the gentry.
In 1845, he was appointed animal painter to Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent, who assigned him to paint several of Queen Victoria’s Arabian horses (Note 1).
Throughout his career, Herring became the leading 19th century British artist in this field. He developed this specific production of Derby winners, in addition to depictions of horses and hunting scenes for the gentry. (Fig.1)
We nevertheless notice Herring’s talent for extreme attention focused on the anatomy and the fur of the horse, leaving no doubt about the leading rank of John Frederick Herring Senior in British sports painting.
Herring’s painting can be found in the Royal Collection Trust, London, Tate Britain, London, Yale Center for British Art, New Haven.
