"Black Figure in Yellow Room, " 1930s Portrait by Student of Thomas Hart Benton

About the Item

Brilliantly conceived and executed by Trew Hocker, an important muralist who was strongly influenced by Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood, this portrait of a young African American man, staring intently into the distance, is a superb example of Social Realism in the 1930s. Hocker was born in Missouri, in the heart of the Midwest, and is best known for his paintings that drew from life in the region, including murals illustrating the Louisiana Purchase Exposition for the University City Post Office in St. Louis. He also was drawn to urban environments, reportedly painting for the 1939-40 New York World's Fair, and died in New York. Hocker painted the frame here as well; the painting is on heavy paper which the artist mounted onto board. (Dimensions include frame.).
