Antique Oil on Board Painting, “The Mayor of Amsterdam in Rembrandt’s Studio”

About the Item

This fantastic oil on board painting is entitled “The Mayor of Amsterdam in Rembrandt’s Studio”. The painting is surrounded by a gilt frame adorned with beading and sinuous medallions. A rich three-dimensional scene is depicted by utilizing a technique called chiaroscuro, which applies strong contrasts between dark and light color. Ironically, Rembrandt himself was known to incorporate chiaroscuro into his artistic endeavors. The painting shows the inside of Rembrandt van Rijn’s Amsterdam atelier (studio) as it most likely appeared in the mid-17th century. A group of people have gathered to observe Rembrandt’s newest creation. A young boy draws back the curtains, unveiling a canvas on an easel to the patrons. Rembrandt’s supporters are scattered throughout the studio, with a man and a woman barely visible in the shadows. Most of the men have van dyke beards, which was extremely popular in 17th century Europe. Five men and one woman are situated around a workbench that is topped with various items, such as a cup with brushes and a gilded accessory. The back wall of the two-story studio is covered with framed paintings, presumably Rembrandt’s own offerings, as he was known to purchase his own artwork from dealers. A nude statue on a pedestal can also be seen among the visitors. Four men and a woman are clustered directly in front of the easel. One of these, seated in a seigneurial armchair, is the subject of the painting: Jan Six, Burgemeester (Mayor) of Amsterdam. Mayor Six was a close friend of Rembrandt and an important figure of the Dutch Golden Age, being a playwright and an art collector/patron. Mayor Six’s 8th great-grandson, Jan Six XI, is currently a Dutch art dealer.

Additions or alterations made to the original: Small professional touch up and light varnish was recently and professionally done. Wear consistent with age and use. Good antique condition with minor buildup on paint. Rubs to frame. Recently professionally touched up in one area and a light varnish was added to bring some of the colors back to life.
