About the Item

Thomas George Cooper (1836-1901), signed, "Sheep in a Landscape" Oil on canvas, Sizes: 67.5 x 57.5 cm with frame (only canvas 46 x 36 cm) The painting, an oil on canvas, depicts a group of sheep, composed of sheep with lambs, resting behind a body of water in a mountain landscape. The canvas is signed at the bottom right T.G. Cooper. He is the interesting London painter Thomas George Cooper, specialized in landscapes, pastoral scenes, rustic genre and active also as an engraver in the technique of etching and puntasecca. The artist is the son and pupil of the well-known painter Thomas Sidney Cooper (1803-1902), who from 1827-1830 lives in Brussels and works with the Dutch painter Eugene Verboeckhoven who specializes in animal paintings. Because of the revolution, which will lead Belgium to independence, Thomas Sidney Cooper, now a specialist in sheep and cattle painting, returns to London where he exhibits his work at the Royal Academy (1833). His success convinced him to continue exhibiting his paintings, starting a brilliant career and becoming the most important animal painter in England in the 19th century. A member of the Royal Academy in 1845 and the Royal Academic in 1867, T.S. Cooper was appointed by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert to immortalize their herds of Jersey cows, a fact that earned him the title of "Cooper Cows". Thomas George Cooper followed his father’s artistic profession and painted landscapes, pastoral scenes and images of rustic genre in oil and watercolor. He lives in the Bayswater district of London, and in 1848 he travels with his father to paint in North Wales. Between 1857 and 1896 he exhibited in the main galleries of London and in many English exhibitions. Among the places where the artist has exhibited with excellent critical and commercial success, the Royal Academy, the British institution, the New Watercolour Society, the Royal Society of painter-Etchers and engravers, the Royal Institute of Oil painters, The Royal Institute of Paints in Water Colors, the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. The artist was also present in exhibitions in Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham. The canvas in question, in a good state of conservation and valuable for its decorative character, can be combined with other works with similar subject of the author (see the photo selection here proposed) present on the antique market and appreciated in private collections.
