"Picnic Apocryphal, " Sophisticated Art Deco Drawing by Benito, Vogue Pioneer

About the Item

This large and important drawing was made by Eduardo Benito, the pioneering artist who helped to establish the impossibly sophisticated images of modern women and men promulgated by Vogue magazine in the 1920s and 1930s. Born in Spain, Benito's work later took him to Paris and New York, where he helped to shape the public's image of polished, well-dressed sophisticates. In this drawing, he imagines a picnic with three women and one man, eating al fresco in a lovely flowered setting. One woman is setting off sans clothing, perhaps to a lake or stream, while the others are seated and playing music, elaborately dressed in floppy hats and wide skirts. (Dimensions below include matte and frame; visible image is 15 inches high by 20 inches wide.)
