Figural Drawing by Augustus John

$2,500

About

This small pencil sketch of a man in three-quarter profile signed "John" is a preparatory work from a sketchbook. The image is quick and confident with an economy of line found in his best works on paper. Augustus John, an English painter, was born in 1888 and died in 1961. Considered one of England's greatest artists of the twentieth century, his works cover a wide range of the early twentieth century movements while he searched for his own personal style. He was much influenced by Picasso in his blue and rose period but like many artists continued to experiment with images throughout his mature years to finally achieve a distinctive and modern British approach to painting. His death caused a large number of his works to come to the market in a famous sale conducted by Christie's on July 20, 1962. The London action placed many of his mature works and large numbers of drawings and sketchbooks into view, further elevating his esteem within his field and the sale was very instrumental in placing a new life force into the auction house as at this point it was flagging behind its rival Sotheby's. This sale was attended by the art and social luminaries of the time from London and in fact much of England. The Queen Mother, as well as H R H Queen Elizabeth, made multiple purchases. The items remain to this day in those royal collections. Also notable was a number of works purchased by Sir Cecil Beaton and those formed an important core of artworks later sold from his estate which also achieved notoriety. Museums and institutions also made many purchases at that sale as well as a later sale the following year. Because of these sales and the social connections brought to light as well as the breadth of his work John's status as an artist has steadily risen.
