BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Find a collection of vintage Brazilian furniture on 1stDibs that includes chairssofastables and more.

Ceramic Link Chain Wall Sculpture
By Asmaa Aman-Tran
Located in Stoughton, MA
Chains echo different emotions in us, some see them as a symbol of imprisonment, and vulnerability and some see as an emotion of inter connectivity and strong bond between the people. The truth is ,chains as we see them in the moment will either resonate the first or the latter symbolism depending on the emotions we feel at the moment. This eye-catching wall hanging adds a nomadic and mystical feel to any room. Created through a hand-intensive process of linking hand built stoneware rings of different sizes, this wall hanging is a dynamic decoration for an eclectic bedroom...

Miriam Loellmann, Contemporary Cube, one-of-a-kind piece, polished copper, leather
By Miriam Loellmann
Located in Rio de Janeiro, RJ
A two-dimensional piece using polished copper and two different kind of leather. This combination creates a contrast between the materials itself and their different textures, like cold-warm, hard-soft, shining-matte. The piece hanging on the wall has a very strong three- dimensional appearance and creates a connection to all other three dimensional objects in the room. Everything what happens around the piece is reflected in the piece. The piece never looks the same, it is always moving and interacting somehow with the people, with things in the room and with light. It helps to create an animate and refreshing atmosphere. The surface of the tiles is perceived with time and conducted through color and structure change. All these processes of interaction embody a memory which is given through alternative layers of experience and communication, highlighting the vivid pulsation of composition in question. Miriam Loellmann [German, b. 1985] Copper Cube...
