Framed 18th Century Comte de Buffon Old World Monkey French Engraving, Macaque

About the Item

A beautifully framed Monkey Plate from the Buffon Comte de Quadrúpedes series by Georges-Louis Leclerc, France – circa 1770. A copper plate, hand-colored engraving titled, Macaque, from the “Histoire Naturelle, Generale et Particuliere.” A Macaque is a medium-sized, forest-dwelling Old World monkey which has a long face and cheek pouches for holding food. Matted and custom framed under glass in black lacquered wood with green boulle and gold leaf details. Provenance: from the Estate of Barbara Allen de Kwiatkowski, a model, socialite, and Andy Warhol protege. Kwiatkowski made her name as a young editor at Interview Magazine and as a frequent subject of the Society Pages. The print, a Parish-Hadley Commission from Judy Cormier Decorative European prints, New York City, hung in her Connecticut estate, decorated by legendary interior designers Sister Parish and Albert Hadley. Outer frame – 14 in. H x 12 in. W x 1.5 in. D Inner sight – 9 in. x 7 in. Gallery label on the verso. Light loss to the finish on the corners of the frame.
