19th Century Italian Micromosaic Portrait Plaque
About the Item
The drama, movement and intensity of the High Baroque all find their way into this beautiful Italian micromosaic portrait plaque, which displays an exceptional level of workmanship, craft and quality. Thousands of tiny glass tesserae have been used to create the stunningly naturalistic image, which uses bold colours, sharp detailing and a masterful use of light and shadow.
The panel depicts a seated lady with a violin in a landscape, holding a scroll of music, and with a halo above her head. The style of the image is reminiscent of the finest Italian portrait painting in the 17th century. The image is oval in shape, set into a rectangular black marble backing, all housed within a gilt bronze frame.
