About

Original sculptural relief painting entitled "Nocturne" by artist, Chanel Verdult, is from a collection cultivated through ancestral DNA. "BOUND TIES," is a series by the artist, which focuses on the unconventional deconstruction of rope work known as Shibari, in Japanese culture. Her maternal side of the family is from a coastal town, Wakayama, in the Kansai region of Japan southwest of Osaka. Her grandmother, Sachiko, has passed down to her a box full of ceremonial kimonos and traditional accessories displaying an act of honor in which the artist odes each of its remnants' heritage. At the bottom of the passed down box full of historical artefacts dating back from the late 1800s-early 1900s lie, a dark "aizome" treated indigo blue kimono with white knotted intertwined rope throughout the unusually modern pattern for its time. When Verdult received the gift, to her disbelief she explained to Sachiko that she had discovered working with rope a few years prior in her experimentations and that the history of their family had become innately clearer with time. "BOUND TIES" aims to unify a history that intersects between the past and present through the material unity of one of the most ancient technologies in the world, rope. Material form is a primal inherited second nature, undiscovered to be discovered in a timeline which we do not decide yet find. To commemorate her Japanese ancestors, the Sakata's, Chanel Verdult continues to work with rope through sculptural reliefs, found objects and paintings. Verdult's collection spans creative techniques of wabi-sabi to shadow and light play, interlacing traditional practices in a minimalistic application. All works of art are named after a member of the Sakata family as well as distinct memories in Wakayama, Japan. Each work in the collection "BOUND TIES," is a unique one of kind artwork crafted by hand and signed by the artist available exclusively through 1stdibs. Chanel Verdult is a multi-sensorial artist shaping alternative atmospheres through mediums of painting, modern-day sculpture, installation, performance, poetry, light and sound. Stemming from her upbringing, which was heavily influenced by antiquity in classical arts, she was raised in a gallery from near birth by jewelers and art collectors. Although her studies started at the early time of being around a gallery, Verdult pursued education in Art History at American University in Washington D.C., where her paintings were exhibited at the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center. Verdult then followed a desire to discover fashion design at Parsons in New York City, where she further honed her artistic skills. Materials: Acrylic, custom indigo dye with one of a kind braided rope on canvas. Dimensions: 50" height x 25 width x 6" depth. Weight: 25-30lbs.
