19th Century Papier Mache Tray on Stand

About the Item

A very attractive mid 19th century oblong papier maché tray having elegant hand painted and gilded floral decoration housed on later square tapered leg stand (What better way to look after the environment than to recycle beautiful, old, antique objects with little purpose in the modern world and give them a new purpose. That’s exactly what’s happened to this pretty little papier maché tray. It is now a very attractive and very functional coffee table or even just side table, with the added bonus that the tray is still removable and can therefore be used as an actual tray as and when required. This particular tray is a good size and largely in excellent condition with just the old marks, scratches, scuffs and dents to be expected in an object of this age which has been well used throughout the years).

  • Georgian Mahogany Butlers Tray on Stand
    Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A good quality George III period mahogany oval butlers tray of panelled construction, having original brass hinges and pierced handles to folding sides, housed on later square leg mahogany stand. During the 18th and 19th centuries a coffee table was not what we regard as a coffee table in the 21st century. Coffee tables back then were always full height, effectively side tables. The modern, low, coffee table is really something which began to be seen during the early 20th century onwards. Based on the above there is a variety of different methods to incorporate a coffee table into an interior for people who wish to furnish their properties with genuine antique furniture, whilst still allowing for the practicalities and function which is required in modern times. Therefore as is now normal with by far the majority of these butlers trays which we see, due to the fact they make absolutely perfect coffee tables, this has been removed from its original, tall, folding stand at some point and fitted onto a lower, more practical and sturdy stand constructed from old antique wood. It's worth noting that generally this means an old broken table...

Based on the above there is a variety of different methods to incorporate a coffee table into an interior for people who wish to furnish their properties with genuine antique furniture, whilst still allowing for the practicalities and function which is required in modern times. • Late Regency 19th Century Gillows Oak Wine Table
By Gillows of Lancaster & London
    Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A very good quality 19th century regency period oak wine table, or lamp table, attributed to gillows of lancaster, having shaped tray top with gadrooned, carved, decoration over moulded reverse tapering column with stylised lotus baluster and elegant swept tripod legs with foliate carved decoration. "Attributed To Gillows." This fine quality, charming little table follows a widely recognised design pattern which features in the Gillows Estimate Sketch Books for 16 July 1822, which refer to a "double round cornered top" and then appear again several times throughout the 1820's and 1830's. The designs are often referred to as "Flower Stands", or "Flower Tables" and there are various different itinerations to be found throuout the Regency and William IV periods. Constructed from charming, warm, rich oak veneers this little table is a great example. The carving is crisp and well executed and it retains a good colour and patina. It also remains in excellent condition and has clearly been well loved and well looked after throughout its history. The dimensions are great. Big enough to be practical and functional, but small enough to go just about anywhere around the home and serve a purpose as an antique lamp table, antique bedside table, antique wine table antique...
