Japonisme Side Tables

JAPONISME STYLE

In the late 19th and early 20th century, France developed an enduring passion for Japanese aesthetics and craftsmanship. Not only did this interpretation of Japanese culture — which became known as Japonisme — infuse fresh energy into French art and design, but it also radically transformed how Europeans, and subsequently the world, would come to understand visual culture.

Until 1853, Japan had been closely guarded against foreign visitors for over two centuries. However, American Commodore Matthew C. Perry sailed into Japan that year and initiated the first of its treaties with the United States and Europe, thereby opening its borders and giving the West its first-ever look at Japanese design.

For the next few decades, taken with Japonisme, sophisticated collectors in Paris, New York and elsewhere gorged themselves on lacquered screens, celadon ceramics and netsuke ornaments, along with artworks depicting various aspects of Japanese life. The East Asian country’s influence on Europe, particularly France, contributed to one of the most creatively prosperous periods in history, leaving an imprint on the Impressionist, Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements, and inspiring artists like Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, Vincent van Gogh as well as luxury houses such as Louis Vuitton and Hermès. Japonisme emerged at the time when the ornate Renaissance Revival style was the most prominent mode of decorating in Europe, and Japanese aesthetics seemed strikingly modern and elegant in comparison.

In addition to everyday practical objects from Japan, such as vases, tableware and decorative boxes, Japanese art, especially Japanese woodblock prints by masters of the ukiyo-e school, caught the eye of many artists — particularly those in the Art Nouveau poster community in 1880s Paris. The luscious organic colors associated with traditional Japanese design, motifs like cherry blossoms and carp and the vivid patterns found in woodblock prints, silks and more were adopted and appropriated by painters as well as ceramicists and those working in other fields of the decorative arts. Today, demand for Japanese lacquerware — furniture, trays, writing boxes, screens, incense burners — from the Edo period (1615–1868) and the late 19th century continues to be very strong among collectors.

Z-II-I Contemporary Brass Mosaic Side Table, Flow Collection
Located in Paris, FR

The Zel-II.I.360 Model I is part of the Flow collection, an ode to movement created by Jonathan Amar in his studios between Paris and Rabat. Flow Collection, Zel.2.1.360. 21st Century Base type 1 Solid french polished brass Moroccan Zellige, pattern 2, Blue On picture measures 36 cm in diameter The Flow collection is an ode to movement designed by Jonathan Amar composed of artisanal articulating lamps and side tables following three years of research and development between his office in Paris and his atelier in Rabat. FUNCTIONALITY - Built with sophisticated joints, extendible arms and lampshades with adjustable stems. - Equipped with the latest LED sensory dimming or wireless technologies. - Available in a variety of sizes to cover all types of living areas. CRAFTSMANSHIP Handcrafted in France and Morocco with French and Italian materials, Flow honours the relationship between meticulous workmanship and quality materials through the thickness, finishes and fixtures of each creation. Due to the handmade nature each piece is unique and might vary slightly in finish. MATERIALS Brass, the central element of each creation, is available in an array of finishes: nickel-plated, polished or aged. The finish you select and the way you care for your Flow throughout the years will result in one of a kind pieces. Since Brass is a metal which works well with a multitude of materials, Jonathan Amar has associated it with a unique selection of colours and textures. Fabric and wicker are used to design lampshades ; Zellige and marbles form table tops and bases ; lamp stems are sheathed in hand pleated leather by artisan saddlers. Hand-engravings, the iconic know-how of our atelier, are available on a selected number of models as an additional request About Jonathan Amar Born in Rabat in 1955 and raised in France from an early age, Jonathan Amar is one of the first designers to export artisanal Moroccan know-how abroad. His eclectic bringing up, from both shores of the Mediterranean, the teaching he acquired during his travels around the world, make him without a doubt one of the most unusual designers-creators of his generation. He is behind the New Age and Ethno-Chic Baroque movements or the art of blending the world's cultures, creating places where exceptional decoration is an essential element. Indeed, he has the talent of merging various elements - even disparate - and integrating them into a new aesthetic set. His style will give birth to a number of movements which will inspire many artists and decorators. This ability allows him to undertake all types of projects, appropriate various volumes and he quickly develops a flair for lighting arrangements, giving each of his projects a strong identity. In 1985, at the age of 30, Hubert Boukobza entrusts him with the artistic direction of ”Les Bains Douches". It is a true institution of Parisian...
