Rare Killarney Games Table, Depictions of Muckross Abbey & Shamrocks
About the Item
19th century Killarney games table with depictions of Muckross Abbey, shamrocks, ferns and acorns throughout.
The furniture from this part of Ireland is very distinctive with inlaid scenes and symbols of Ireland. The top has a scene of Muckross Abbey in the center with two fern leaves on either side. The frieze below the top features two dolphins with branches of leaves and acorns flowing from the dolphin's mouths. The base and column of the table both feature shamrocks. The ebonized paw feet are indicative of the region. The table opens to reveal games boards with acorns and shamrocks decorating the borders. There is room for storage of the game pieces in between the top and base, which is accessible when the top is rotated to open.
