With an old and beautifully patinated surface, the table remains silky to the touch with traces of scars and wear having long since oxidized to join the finish throughout. All three leaves are solid singular planks of walnut with a simple rounded edging, the drop leaves hanging on their original forged iron hinges. The apron on either side is a thick vertical walnut veneer over an oak secondary wood, the pine sides of the frame dovetailed into this; the outer rail is nailed to the inner pine frame, the gate leg swinging outward with three-over-two knuckle hinges secured with a dowel through the center to raise the leaves. This results in a full 53” table length, a comfortable space for entertaining guests or playing cards in the evening. The very gentle curve of the legs is only barely suggestive of the cabriolet, each foot terminating in a finely carved set of talons grasping a sphere. The petite size and profile of this drop leaf table make it a most attractive console piece for the hall or entryway, as a table against the wall beneath a large pier mirror...
