George III Marquetry Inlaid Pembroke Table Attributed to Mayhew and Ince

About

Of outstanding design and craftsmanship, this fine quality George III Pembroke table is attributed to Mayhew & Ince. The satinwood and tulipwood oval drop-leaf table is in excellent condition and carries with it noted provenance (see below). The centre of the table is inlaid with an oval panel of lobed petals emanating from a central conch shell and green stained highlights to the oval reserve; the corners are decorated with engraved ribbon tied sprays of flowers and leaves. Each end flap is also decorated with tulipwood crossbanding and floral theme, tied with ribbons. The frieze is similarly inlaid with a tulipwood-banded mahogany drawer (false drawer to the opposite end) above square tapered tulipwood crossbanded legs; with square collars above brass cup castors. Attributed to Mayhew & Ince, circa 1775. Notes: Mayhew & Ince were established in London in 1759 and produced Fine furniture for the next 40 years. Use of natural colored woods enhanced with engraving and inlaid to create a dramatic "visual", is often a signature of their work, which is readily apparent in this table. Use of Fine quality satinwood, crossbanded in tulipwood with a rich mahogany edge, all enhanced by a bold harewood and fruitwood conch-shell medallion and berried garlands flanked by ribbon tied bellflower swags to the leaves, blending into the crossbanding, point to Mayhew & Ince attribution. The marquetry and medallions which hang beneath the ribbon-tied bellflowers are strikingly similar to a commode attributed to Mayhew & Ince, illustrated in L. Wood, Catalogue of Commodes, London, 1994, pg. 210, No. 24 pl ii. Provenance: Devenish and Company. Christie's, New York, January 24, 2001 Lot #553. Dimensions: Height 27 ½”. Width 17 ½” (closed). Width 35 ¾” (open). Deep 29”.
