English Georgian Period 18th Century Mahogany and Satinwood Pembroke Table

About the Item

English Georgian period 18th century mahogany and satinwood pembroke supper table of rare conformation, with shelf enclosed by brass wire (which was originally backed with silk to hide service items that would be needed through a multi course meal). The double doors enclosing the lower shelf are concave. Supper tables of this form were also used during the day to write letters as evidenced by the leather sliding interior writing surface and flip out compartment for inkwells hidden within the drawer. The top has three panels of fiddle grained mahogany enclosed by satinwood and ebony stringing and surrounded by straight grained mahogany. One panel for the top and one panel each on the dropleaves, circa 1780.
