Desk in Flower Marquetry, Louis XVI Period, Stamped C. Topino, 18th Century

Desk with flaps in Louis XVI period flower marquetry stamped C. Topino and JME (on the rear right upright) opening to a border drawer surmounting a flap revealing six small drawers and four lockers and two doors at the bottom hiding two drawers; a chest and two compartments. The facade and sides hold interlacing frieze and rosettes decorated with panels inlaid with flowers on a light wooden background in a frame of amaranth and rosewood; the uprights with cut sides with simulated grooves and falls in gilded bronze with Greek motifs; resting on straight feet; alep breccia marble top (restored); with a label on the back inscribed WS Broadwood and 20. The general shape of this desk, which is very architectural and cutaway, decorated with simulated grooves with an interlacing frieze in the upper drawer, is repeated several times in Topino's work. The flower and flower garland marquetry is exceptional on this cabinet. This cabinet is a reference in the work of Topino. circa 1780 Charles Topino, cabinetmaker, became master in 1773.
