Rare Granite 'Jumbo' Cocktail Table by Gae Aulenti for Knoll International, 1980

US$22,000

About

This table is a showstopper - a custom ordered, in deep black polished granite, 1980s produced by Knoll International, "Jumbo" cocktail table designed by Gae Aulenti in 1965, originally for Gavina. Since granite is such a hard material, this table is still in showroom "mint" condition. No scratches, dings, chips, cracks or any issues whatsoever. I personally drove out to pick this table up from the family who had owned the table since they first custom ordered it from Knoll in the early 1980s. Their concrete cladded Mid-Century Modern designer-abode was filled with beautiful Knoll designs and decorated in the 1980s. From their black leather Charles Pfister sectional sofa to their black leather Florence Knoll armchairs and more, this black granite Jumbo table was right at home in a living room that looked like it could have been an early 1980s Knoll showroom. While the marble examples of this design are rare and highly in-demand - this black polished granite is incredibly more rare and may have been the only one made. We surely have not seen a granite version of this and the family claimed it was a special request and was custom made for them. We have some amazing examples of important designs in this gallery - but I have to say, this is one of my favorite. The color is a deep black, some of the images wash out the top due to the bright photography lights. But it is a deep black color with speckles of granite veining. Such an incredible example of this fantastic 1960s design. Perfect fit for a Postmodern or Mid-Century Modern home, this Jumbo table by Gae Aulenti for Knoll International would also work great in a Contemporary or Transitional home or office. Also consider for a Traditional, Classical, French, Spanish, Mediterranean, Mixed-Style, Asian, or Minimalistic styled room. Great for a designer residential or commercial project, due to its strength and sturdiness, would be apt for a hotel, lobby lounge, restaurant, retail boutique, designer showroom or studio, executive or creative office, or public space such as a library or museum. Measurements: H 14.25" x W 44.5" x D 44.5" Condition: Mint condition, ready for immediate use.

About the Design

Jumbo Coffee Table

Designed by Gae Aulenti
The Jumbo coffee table was more than just a piece of furniture to Gae Aulenti (1927–2012). As a participant in Italy’s Neo-Liberty movement in the late 1950s, she rejected the omnipresent Bauhaus modernist aesthetic and instead chose to create pieces that exemplified her taste for classical design with a modern edge. The Jumbo coffee table, with its opulent marble top and sculpted column legs, epitomized her approach. Weighing nearly 450 pounds, the table is unquestionably heavy yet it still maintains a graceful air that hearkens back to Aulenti’s adoration for classic Roman architecture, a seductive characteristic of her late-career architectural projects, too, such as her conversion of a train station to the Musée d’Orsay for impressionist art as well as the renovation of Venice’s Palazzo Grassi into an exhibition space. In 1954, decades before she transformed a Paris landmark transit hub into a museum, Aulenti graduated from the Polytechnic University of Milan as one of only two women in her class. She became known for her industrial design work and as a vocal advocate for rejecting postwar Italian architecture. Gianni Agnelli, the chairman of Fiat, was impressed with her passion and commissioned her to design his company’s showrooms in Turin, Zurich and Brussels. Aulenti’s work for Fiat yielded another design opportunity, this time, at Knoll, where she designed the company’s showrooms in Boston and New York City. In 1972, Knoll began to manufacture her Jumbo coffee table, which she initially designed in 1965. The company made Aulenti’s table available in three marble finishes: Calacatta, Carrara and Nero Marquina.
