Antique 18th Century Spanish Baroque Chestnut Desk or Sidetable

About the Item

This beautiful rustic desk or sidetable was made in Northern Spain around 1760. The top is made from one ! solid plank of chestnut that is 1,18 inch thick. It is joined to the base with the typical dovetail connection. The table base has lyre shaped legs on either side. It features two drawers with geometrical carvings in the front panel. The drawers have iron knobs that differ from each other. The whole table is made by the use of dovetail and mortise and tenon joints. The table has clearly been used and it shows many dents, scratches and wormholes. The table has its original warm brown color. The color was made by grinding burned walnuts solved in water. The final finish was a wax coat, that was repeated throughout the many years of use. A great patina with deep gloss was the result. We've cleaned the table inside and out and treated it for woodworm (this was a precaution, there was no sign of active woodworm) The table was warmed up and the old wax layers were buffed to obtain the deep gloss. The table has been made sturdy again and is now ready for use.
