George 111rd Card Table Demi-Lune Satinwood, Sheraton Period circa 1790

About the Item

A very beautiful and elegant Georgian Sheraton Period, fold over Demi-Lune card or games table in Satinwood, Circa 1790. This is a semi circular (demi-lune) fold over table made of Satinwood and carefully chosen Satinwood veneers, with Kingwood inlay, the top set out as a sunburst or fan radial pattern. The rear legs both hinge individually outward, to support the fold over flap, to reveal a green felt circular top for playing cards or other games. The legs are of an elegant tapering square section ending in spade feet. Overall a very fine and useful Georgian piece to grace any home. Thomas Sheraton Thomas Sheraton was born in 1751 at Stockton-on-Tees, Durham, England and died in 1806. He initially trained as a cabinetmaker but settled in London around 1790. In 1791-94 he published the " Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer' Drawing Book" in four parts. Part 3 of this book, is the important section for furniture and illustrates in some detail the neo classical themed furniture tastes of the day. Sheraton style furniture was popular in England and the USA from roughly 1790 to 1820.

  • George 111 Mahogany Chippendale Dining Chair Reupholstered, Circa 1760
    By Thomas Chippendale
    Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a superb hardwood walnut or mahogany, Chippendale back, side or dining chair which we date to the mid 18th century, George 111rd period, circa 1760. The chair has a very well carved "Chippendale" back splat consisting of vertical interconnected ribbons with good detail. The top rail has a serpentine crest with central crisply carved detail with an acorn motif and well formed & carved ears with rosettes. The pegged and jointed legs are square with an inside chamfer back and front and the front legs are flute molded to match the side rails, with dovetailed "H" cross-stretchers. It has a drop-in seat which has been newly upholstered and webbed but could easily be upholstered in a fabric of choice. The proportion of this chair is excellent with very good width and a good rake to the backs and rear legs. The hardwood has developed a beautiful mellow colour and patina with age and polishing over the years. Overall a fine quality, English Georgian dining chair.
