Louis XVI Style Rectangular Vitrine / Curio Cabinet

About the Item

This is a Louis XVI style large rectangular shaped gilt wood vitrine/curio cabinet. It has a front door with a glass that closes with a key. The curio cabinet has also two glasses in the sides. The front one borders are adorned with the carving of a garland of acanthus leaves in the top and below it, there is another adornment made of beads alternated by cylinders. This last one ornamentation is repeated in the borders of the sides of the glasses. The bottom front and sides parts of the vitrine are wood panels that have hand painted scenes. The front one shows a scene of a lady that hurt her leg or ankle and she is standing up to the side while one of her leg is hold up by a man sat near her. Another man is standing up in front of her like looking for help. Behind them appear to be a niche with a sculpture and a fountain. The paintings of the the sides show a pair of cherubs that have some flowers and a bow while the other ones have a scarf and a tambourine. The borders of the paintings are adorned in the same way of their respective glasses. A carved rosettes embellish each side of the front top, middle and bottom area. A row of tiny swags decorates the upper borders and a garland of flower buds the lower ones of the curio. Inside the cabinet, there are three shelves that are covered with brick color velvet fabric and below them, a storage space area. Louis XVI turned, tapered and fluted legs supported the curio cabinet. The vitrine is lighted. It has an electrical transformer hidden below the inside compartment.

    Wear consistent with age and use. Some chips of the gold painting appear in some areas. The vitrine has a key that opens and closes but it cannot be taken out.

    This is an Empire style gilt bronze mounted wood, glass and marble top heavy and large vitrine/curio cabinet. The wide tapered rectangular vitrine has four glass walls framed with wood. The front door is one of them and it is beveled. It is decorated with a gilt mounted bronze garland of roses, mixed of flowers and foliage at the top and bottom area. At the top center, there is a gilt bronze shell and at the bottom a Wedgwood light blue porcelain round plaque with a cherub that is carving a piece of stone. Above the plaque, a large gilt bronze bow is decorating the curio cabinet. There are scrolls of acanthus leaves adorning each side of the upper top corners of the door. A gilt bronze swag made of laurel leaves branches with a bow in the center embellish the frieze of each one of the sides, and its corners are also decorated with scrolls of acanthus leaves with a garland of buds hanging from them. There are also some gilt beads chain ornaments decorating the wood part of the sides. The cornice is adorned with a bronze border made of carved acanthus leaves. The upper part of the curio cabinet is covered by a heavy light pink with grey veins marble top. To support the vitrine there are four gilt heavy bronze lion paws decorated with large acanthus leaves and a pair of laurel branches at the upper part of them. These acanthus leaves are spreading toward the lower front border and forming an arc. There are four adjustable thick glass shelves inside the curio cabinet and a lower one made of wood that is covered with a light yellow color Damask fabric.
