Philadelphia Arts & Crafts/Aesthetic Movement Sideboard by Frank Furness
About the Item
A Philadelphia Arts & Crafts / Aesthetic Movement sideboard in walnut with a facsimile of the original black ebonized finish, attributed to Frank Furness (1839-1912) and likely crafted by Daniel Pabst, Philadelphia, circa 1900. Furness was a leading architect in Philadelphia and designed more than 600 buildings over a distinguished career that spanned 45 years. Pabst, who was of German descent and a distinguished cabinetmaker also working in Philadelphia, carried out Furness' furniture designs. This handsome sideboard has two pedestals that open to shallow drawers for silverware, offering added space for china and silver. The center compartment is a fall-front drawer for taller storage items like a tea set or decanters. The exquisite hardware repeats the organic, stylized foliate design present in the carved woodwork.
