Ernst Schwadron Cerused Triple Cabinet

A truly unique three piece storage sideboard consisting of three cerused double door cabinets set on a single trapezoidal plinth base by Viennese architect and designer, Ernst Schwadron. Left and right cabinets consist of double doors mounted with brass knife hingers. The double handles are incised with Schwadron's distinctive signature diagonal crosshatch pattern. The center cabinet has two glass doors which slide on a track of metal bearings. All cabinets have a single fixed vertical divider. Left and right cabinets each have three fixed shelves. Center cabinet has pin fittings to support a number of glass shelves. Left and right cabinets were fitted to hold hi-fi equipment so shelving is spaced for such accoutrements including radio, phonograph, and LP records. Speakers were separate. The right side fitted shelves have at some point been modified and the rear panel is presently open. We can replace if required. Per Schwadron's rendering (see image 6), this sideboard as well as other furnishings were executed for the Riverside Drive apartment of Mr & Mrs. Norman J. Liberman in 1949 and come directly from the Estate of Mrs. Sylvia Liberman, née Hittner. Literature: ARCHITEKTUR UND WOHNFORM INNENDEKORATION Heft 3 1951 pages 59-71 New York Times, November 27, 1949 "Planned for Comfort" by Betty Pepis Heidrun Holzfeind: Homecoming (a lecture about Ernst Schwadron, architect), 2012 Innendekoration: mein Heim, mein Stolz ; die gesamte Wohnungskunst in Bild und Wort, Universitätsbibliothek Heidelberg Ernst Schwadron, born Vienna, July 1, 1896, died Lenox Hill, NY, USA, March 3, 1979, began his career at his family's acclaimed ceramics and tile company, Bruder Schwadron of Vienna. Earnst started working as an architect in Vienna in the late 1920s, focusing on apartment interiors and furniture design. His signature interior designs, furniture and lamps were typical for the restrained Viennese modernism of the early 1930s. By the mid 1930s Schwadron was well established as an architect and his works were published frequently in European architectural and design magazines. He fled Vienna in 1938 and settled in New York where he worked as chief designer for the interior design company Rena Rosenthal Design, where he also met his second wife Gladys. He later founded his own company, Ernst Schwadron Inc. on Madison Avenue for 30 years. Schwadron's designs were made in the studio workshop of Illi Kagan where the young Vladimir Kagan worked as an apprentice and recalled "those damn diagonal cuts were really a bitch to do." For an additional charge it would be possible to replace the glass doors of the center cabinet with hinged doors in matching or contrasting finish, or to reduce the size of the plinth base to support just two cabinets side by side, or even to make the cabinets freestanding on their own plinth base. Note that there is a notable finish difference on the sides of each cabinet which heretofore have never been exposed to sunlight.
