$12,500Asking Price

An exceptional Hepplewhite demilune form mahogany sideboard with conforming top surmounting a center pull-out butler’s desk which opens to a compartmentalized interior and writing surface, over two tambour doors which slide open to reveal a storage compartment, flanked on each side by upper conforming fitted drawers over lower doors, which open for additional storage on each side, all supported by four tapered square legs terminating with brass casters. Provenance: The sideboard/desk descended from the Silsbee family, purchased by L. Crowninshield and F.S. Whitwell in 1929. The label that appears inside the desk is inscribed as follows - “Family tradition says that Daniel Webster and Henry Clay, and other statesmen of that time who used to stay with my grandfather, have written at the desk in this sideboard”. Nathaniel Silsbee who was the original owner of the sideboard, was an important figure in American History. He was a ship master, merchant and then a politician who became a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and then president of the Massachusetts State Senate. Nathaniel Silsbee married Mary Crowninshield (daughter of George Crowninshield) in 1802. The Silsbees, Crowninshields and Whitwhells were part of the most influential and established families of Massachusetts and Boston elite. The sideboard desk is in very good condition, with shrinkage cracks, minor surface imperfections, restorations, and expected wear from age and use. Dimensions: 42 ½” h x 72” w x 27” d.
