"Magnolia" Cabinet/Bookcase by Andrea Branzi

About the Item

An early seminal example of the work of famed Italian architect and intellectual, Andrea Branzi. His incredible fascination with imposing "plants, trees and branches within the compositions that he calls furniture certainly derives from his earlier 1970s experiment, "Animali Domestici" ("Domestic Animals"). Yet plant fronds notwithstanding, it is a beautiful and functional high-tech/high-touch bookshelf!! Together with Paolo Deganello, Massimo Morozzi, Gilberto Coretti, Dario and Lucia Bartolini, he founded the Archizoom movement in 1966, an early manifestation of the Italian Radical Architecture movement. In his career, Branzi wrote many books, among which are "Italy: The Hot House" and "Domestic Animals" (published by MIT press). In 1983 he was one of the founders of the 'Domus Academy', the first international post-graduate school of design. In 2008 Andrea Branzi was named an Honorary Royal Designer in the United Kingdom. The same year he launched a series of shelf units and console tables entitled "Trees", which were exhibited in Paris. Formally, these pieces are a delight, the rigid monochrome geometry of the metal playing against the patterned vitality of a tree. But there is also something surreal about the way these highly romantic trees boldly invade this accomplished Minimalist furniture. In a prescient way, he foresaw the public's fascination with the environment and the importance of maintain the influence of nature in our lives.
