Elegant French Louis XV Period Secretary Writing Desk with Hidden Compartment

A French Neoclassical commode, with hidden secretary and original hardware, from the turn of the 18th and 19th century. This antique commode from France gives the appearance of being a three drawer chest at first glance. However, discreetly hidden behind the upper "drawer" is in fact a fall-front, which opens to reveal a small writing desk with three open cubbies for organization within. The lower portion of the chest houses two full-sized drawers. The rectangular-shaped top has pronounced and rounded front corners, which carry through down the side posts and are flute-carved. Each drawer front is adorn with brass trim and retains the original brass (and really great) hardware; a pair of rectangular bail pulls with a beautiful Neoclassic escutcheon set at center. This commode is presented upon conical legs with exaggerated tops that canopy over their tapered feet. The rich fruitwood has a wonderful old patina throughout. An Italian small sized table, or writing desk, from the 19th century. This antique table from Italy features a rectangular-shaped top overhanging an apron fitted with a single drawer at one long side. The table is raised on a pair of hour-glass shaped legs flanking either side, with beautifully carved outer edges. A wooden stretcher bar adds support between the legs and is carved with a small arch at center and pierced cut-out embellishment. The medium tone wood has an old patina throughout, a lovely reflection of it's age. The leg clearance at the underside of this piece is 25.25 inches in height. Carved in southern France, circa 1760, the fold out secretary is both stylish and functional; the elegant writing desk crafted from solid walnut, stands on cabriole legs over a scalloped apron and dressed with bombe drawer across the front embellished with the original patinated bronze handles. The top folds down to reveal a large writing surface, a theater with four smaller drawers on the sides, and a double compartment niche in the center. When sliding out the drawers and niche, the cabinet reveals different secret storage compartments underneath (see pictures). Both sides with scalloped apron are decorated with recessed panels.
