About the Item

18th Century slant-front desk in violet wood Louis XV style and period Exceptional slant-front desk so-called "dos d'âne" ("donkey back") desk inlaid on all sides in violet wood. 18th Century furniture, Louis XV period and style . Dimensions (Height/Width/Depth): 56 x 80 x 43cm. Shape : Curved, mounted on 4 cambered feet. Openings : In front, a row of two small drawers and a row of long drawers. Under the opening top: One long drawer and a smaller one in the middle, five drawers with pulls and a secret. Ornamentation: Closed - The cabinet is punctuated by four gilded lock entries (key provided). The two feet in front of the cabinet end in a gilded base with a plant motif. Open - The golden knobs are decorated with a rosette. The red leather top is in very good condition. Marquetry: Veneer all sides in violet wood, including the back of the furniture. >> What is a slant-front desk so-called "dos d'âne" ? A desk "dos d'âne" designates a desk with panel on the side. Thus, in profile, this type of furniture simulates the pack of a donkey. It appeared in France in the 18th century, during Louis XV reign and will gradually evolve, especially in the ladies' salons in its reduced version. Depending on the position of its panel, open or closed, the desk can have two functions. In the closed position, the desk could serve as a reading table. There is sometimes a strip on the panel to place a book or a score. In the open position, the panel forms a tablet for writing. The interest of this small piece of furniture lies especially in its various drawers and hiding places allowing to keep writings. Locking systems are multiplying, drawers and boxes are fitted with more or less accessible covers. And often, between the two rows of drawers hides a hiding place, in line with the secret furniture created in the 16th century under the influence of Catherine de Medicis.
