Antique Berkey & Gay William & Mary Walnut China Hutch Cabinet Jacobean Gothic
Located in Dayton, OH
"Antique Berkey & Gay china hutch. A beautiful blend of William & Mary, Jacobean and Gothic styling. circa 1905-1929. Made of walnut featuring matchbook walnut burl panels. The two central doors are below a diamond carved frieze and exhibit exquisite geometric molding with quarter cut applied finials and round medallions. The cabinet opens to two removable shelves with plate grooves over a large lower dovetailed drawer for accessory storage. Drawer is set between acanthus carved quarter cut finials and rest over an apron of diagonal striping with lower ""S"" carved spandrals. The hutch is supported by turned legs along the front with bun feet and straight legs along the rear with a tapered foot. Interior of the drawer bares Berkey & Gay's first makers mark. A Breif History of Berkey & Gay Furniture Company In 1855, William Berkey arrived in Grand Rapids and founded a mill to manufacture window sashes and other wood building products. He was joined by his brother, Julius, who later began manufacturing what became known as the Berkey Table. This was highly successful, and soon the Berkey brothers were concentrating on making furniture. The company took on various partners over time, including George W. Gay, who bought an interest in the company in 1866 to form Berkey Bros and Gay. In 1873, William Berkey withdrew from the company, and Julius Berkey and George W. Gay incorporated to form the Berkey & Gay Furniture Company. In 1874, the new company opened their six-story factory, complete with wholesale and retail showrooms, in Grand Rapids. By 1882, this factory covered three city blocks. The company is known for making Victorian furniture. George W. Gay, although continuing to be involved with Berkey & Gay, also struck out on his own business ventures. One of these was the Oriel Cabinet Company, which he established in 1880. Oriel Cabinet constructed a factory at this site in the 1880s, but the original factory was destroyed by fire in 1890. In 1892, the company constructed a new factory, which continues to occupy the site. Both Oriel Cabinet and Berkey & Gay continued independently until 1911, when the two companies merged. The Oriel factory became Berkey & Gay's Plant No. 1 following the merger, and an addition was immediately made to the plant in 1912. In 1919 the company further expanded the factory 240 feet north along Monroe Avenue. In 1920, the company merged with the Wallace Furniture Company and the Grand Rapids Upholstery Company to form Consolidated Furniture...

Antique Grand Rapids Chair Co. William & Mary Walnut Display Cabinet Jacobean
Located in Dayton, OH
"Antique Grand Rapids Chair Company China Display Cabinet, Hutch or Curio, circa 1910-20s. Drawing inspiration from William & Mary and Jacobean styling. A rectangular frame made from walnut with burled panels. Features a central lockable glass door trimmed with shapely molding along the corners and a downward quarter cut spindle at the center. Opens to two shelves with plate grooves. The cabinet is supported by tuned legs along the front and straight legs at the rear. The legs are connected by an H stretcher with beautifully turned trestle support. Originally purchased from Henshaws Furniture in Cincinnati, Ohio Grand Rapids Chair Co. 1872 - 1973 Grand Rapids, Michigan 1872: Company founded; incorporated the following year. 1945 – 1957: Company operates as a subsidiary of Sligh-Lowery, but continues to produce furniture under the Grand Rapids Chair name. 1957: Firm is purchased by Baker Furniture Co., but furniture is still produced under the Grand Rapids Chair name. 1973: Factory and assets fully integrated into Baker; furniture no longer made under the Grand Rapids Chair name. From its founding until 1880, the company produced chairs and sold surplus logs and lumber. In 1878, they boasted more than 450 styles of chairs. More than 300 boys and girls were employed at the State Reform School in Lansing to cane the seats. In that same year, they began production of upholstery frames for parlor furniture. In 1880 Elisha Foote expanded the styles of furniture made and began manufacturing complete suites. An 1883 article about Grand Rapids Chair Co. mentions that ash is their popular wood for that season, with “carved panels and heavier moldings.” By the late 1880s their product lines had expanded to include medium-grade chamber suites, tables, bookcases, sideboards, and chiffoniers of maple, birch, cherry, and walnut, as well chairs. Ads by the turn of the century stated emphatically that “we make no chairs.” Early 20th-century ads show both Golden Oak case pieces with serpentine fronts and cabriole legs referencing French historical styles, as well as Mission oak pieces. A 1900 article also lists mahogany, birch, maple, and bird’s-eye maple in their lines. Ads from the 1910s and ‘20s show dining room furniture, living room, and hall furniture, and spinet desks...
