Tiger Maple Queen Anne High Chest with Bonnet Top, Massachusetts

About

This highboy is of a small-scale with a width of only 35 in. and has a very delicate, fine appearance, with a beautifully formed pediment, which flanks its original urn and finial. While this form exists, finding one in tiger maple with a glorious color and exciting grain is one in 1,000. While highboys with flattops that are tiger maple are seen, ones with the graceful, pedimented bonnet top are rare, circa 1740-1760. This highboy was originally handled by the Levy gallery and the attribution indicates it coming directly from the family to them. It was also illustrated in Antiques Magazine (see images below). Provenance: Johnson family, Massachusetts. Measures: Height 80 in., width 38 1/2 in., case width 35 in., depth 20 in.
