Important English George III Brown Mahogany Commode

About the Item

An important George III mahogany commode attributed to William Gomm. The serpentine mahogany top with a crossbanded edge, above three long and two short drawers with gilt Rococo handles, flanked by superbly carved angle supports, with shaped sides, on shaped bracket feet with lignum vitae casters. About. William Gomm & Sons were exceptional cabinet makers of Clerkenwell close London, they supplied furniture to many of the Great English Houses, including Stoneleigh Park, where in 1763 they are recorded as supplying six fine serpentine commodes, for the 5th Lord Leigh, See C Gilbert dictionary of English furniture. Another example of William Gomm's work can be seen in R W Symonds, “Masterpieces of English Furniture”, page 39, figure 28.
