19th Century Mahogany Campaign Secretaire Chest

US$7,944.03

About

Special antique mahogany Campaign chest of drawers with secretaire. Entirely in beautiful original condition. The Campaign chest of drawers consists of 2 parts, flat drawer pullers, brass corners and the original removable legs. All this is characteristic of a Campaign chest. It is unusual to have a small narrow drawer above the secretaire drawer. This makes the whole chest more refined to see. The secretaire drawer is slightly smaller and more compact than usual. Here too you can see that the interior is also beautifully detailed. There are traces of use, but that is really part of a Campaign chest of drawers. It is easy for us to remove this by polishing the cabinet again, but with a Campaign cabinet we want to see the traces of use. There are 2 screw holes on both sides, which is not clear where they were used for. This may have been for installing protection during transport. Origin: England, Victorian Period: circa 1840 Size: Br 99cm x 45cm x 107cm These cabinets were taken in the 19th century by British officers of the English army when they were sent to ,for example, India. They were made in 2 parts for quick and easy transport. The brass corners were made to prevent damage during transport. The idea that they could move quickly in campaigns / fights in this way was outdated around 1900. The collection of Campaign furniture of senior officers had grown to such an extent over the years that it became complete removals and was therefore no longer fast and efficient.
