Paul Mayen Rotating Storage Cabinet for Habitat

US$3,250per set

About

Two-piece stacking and rotating storage cabinet in walnut, each with two open cubbies, designed originally for record storage by Paul Mayen and produced by Habitat/Intrex, circa 1960. The bottom component has a ball-bearing turntable underneath so that the open side can show, or the finished back can show. The two separate units, each of which can function as a side table, “fit and align to each other without using any mechanical attachments.” An entry in Furniture Forum, attached here, shows the cabinets in stacks up to four high. A scarce item from this underrated designer whose Minimalist lighting and furnishings graced modernist interiors beginning in the early 1950s. Provenance: From the estate collection of a relative of Mayen’s (a nephew who was a plant manager at Habitat for close to thirty years). Measurements are of the two cabinets stacked. The bottom (slightly larger) cabinet measures H 16” x W 16” x D 13.5”. The top (slightly smaller) cabinet measures H 15.75” x W 15” x D 13.5”. Price is for the two pieces together.
