About the Item

Georges-Alphonse-Bonifacio Monbro (1807-1884) A fine pietre dure pair of side cabinets An Important Pair of Napoleon III gilt bronze-mounted ebonised and Pietre Dure Inlaid Side Cabinets Stamped "MONBRO AINE" for Georges-Alphonse-Bonifacio Monbro (1807-1884), 19th century, circa 1860. Measures: H 98.5, W 57, D 38.2 cm. This important pair of Napoleon III "Boulle" ebonized cabinets present refined gilt bronze mounts and very fine pietre dure inlaid. The famous Parisian firm of Monbro was founded around 1801 by Georges-Alphonse-Bonifacio Monbro (d.1884), the eldest son of ébéniste Georges-Marie-Paul-Vital-Bonifacio (d. 1841). Monbro fils aîné (1807–1884) is thus recorded as furniture maker, upholsterer and dealer in objects of vertu at 18 Rue Basse de Rempart in Paris during the period 1838 until circa 1853. Monbro moved to 19 Rue du Helder in 1853 and remained at this address until the mid-1860s. Alphonse Monbro is also listed as ‘curiosity dealer’ at 370 Oxford Street, London in 1852, and again in 1860. Monbro fils aîné was engaged as interior decorators by the collector Josephine Bowes (1825–1874) for the Chateau du Barry at Louvenciennes and also supplied furniture, carpets and ornaments to Josephine during the period circa 1850-1860 including a "Louis XV CARVED AND PAINTED BED" (Bowes Museum) and "an 18th century Italian giltwood side table". Monbro also supplied a number of pieces of revivalist furniture in the 18th century style to the collectors John and Josephine Bowes. On April 26th 1865, the London auctioneer Philipps sold the "second portion of the stock of valuable decorative property, both ancient and modern, from the celebrated house of Monbro Ainé of Paris". In 1868 Monbro sold some panelling dating from 1728-1732, which was formerly in the Hôtel de Richelieu, 21 Places Royale (Place des Vosges), to the Historisches Museum, Berne, Switzerland. Besides maintaining a shop in London in the 1860s at Frith Street, Soho, showing its importance at the time, Monbro exhibited at the Exposition des Produits de l'Industrie in 1844 and the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1855, displaying exceptional items incorporating Florentine pietre dure inlay, such as our pair of cabinets. Each cabinet has a shaped red veined marble top above concave sides. Below is a single cupboard door centred by a gilt bronze ribbon tied frame with stylised palms at the corner of the spandrels, containing a black Belgian marble panel. The panel is inlaid with hardstones and agates including: turquoise, serpentine, carnelian and Siena marble, depicting baskets issuing flowers. The canted uprights are inlaid with further fruiting branches and headed by truly exceptional gilt bronze term figures of bearded men. The cabinets are raised on gilt bronze-mounted plinth bases with shaped aprons. The Musée d’Orsay includes in its collections several examples of Monbros’ work.
