Elizabethan Oak Chest, Somerset, England, circa 1600
Late Elizabethan oak chest, West Country, Somerset, circa 1600. The two plank top retaining original wrought iron loop hinges above a floral lunette carved frieze flanked by a pair of Green man masks, above three arcaded panels carved with foliate decoration, surmounted by egg and dart arcades. All divided by two pairs of Caryatid and Atlanta figures, with applied dentil lower frieze. Having twin plain panel ends with further lunette frieze rails. With excellent rich golden brown color and high surface patination throughout. The interior has two 19th century owners brands "C. J. Shoppee" to the under lid. Provenance: Reference to a Mr C. J. Shoppee, Architect, is in 'London Past and Present: Its History, Associations, and Traditions'. By Henry Benjamin Wheatley, published in 1891. Expanding on and updating Peter Cunningham's 'Handbook of London', 1849. C. J. Shoppee was the architect responsible for the restoration of the Barber Surgeons Hall, Monkwell Street, City of London in 1863-1864.
