Yuma Kano Rust Harvest Stool #02 Acrylic Art

About the Item

Stool designed by Yuma Kano. Green colored materials are acrylic. This acrylic is what rust was transformed. Artist calls it "Rust Harvest." He is making "Rust Harvest" acrylic in his own hand. Followings are statement of the project. “Rust Harvest” “Rust Harvest” is an experimental materials project focused on rust. The prevention of rust is an age-old problem in manufacturing. Rust has brought down planes, slowed ships, disabled engines, ruined bridges, spread through reinforced concrete, jammed guns, broken washing machines, and reduced unnumbered bicycles to useless scrap. While constantly cast as a devil, a closer look at rust reveals a variety of startlingly beautiful patterns and complex mixtures of color. With this in mind, we believed that the attractive expressions of rust could be produced in quantity and used in new textures and products. Through trial and error, we were able to develop a technique that allowed us to transfer only the rust from metal plates using acrylic resin. We expose these plates to light, rain, earth, and seawater to create rust, collect the rust, and then subject the plates to more weathering, which creates another crop to harvest in a process similar to an agricultural cycle. While we still use natural rust, we have taken into account manufacturing, distribution, and costs to create a complete system of production that has moved beyond the Scope of design alone. Unlike metal, the light penetrates rust trapped inside the acrylic resin, which creates a frozen moment from a process that has taken years. Because the resulting material can be used like ordinary acrylic resin, it holds limitless possibilities for various products, interior design, and construction. “Rust Harvest Furniture” This is part of a collection of limited edition furniture made with material from the Rust Harvest project. The way light refracts through the thickness of the resin provides the rust a mysterious appearance, as though you are looking at the soil of a distant planet. Adding parts of the metals the rust came from (iron for red, copper for blue), lets the user compare it to its original form. The sheets of metal are left untreated, giving it a raw look, and after years have passed, they should look like the material within the acrylic. Rust, metal, and acrylic. The contrasting combination of natural and manmade materials produces a fascinating sculptural quality in these pieces of furniture.

  • Clear Acrylic 'Stooble' (Stool x End Table), Multipurpose Sub-Surface Terrarium
    By Thislexik, Vedat Ulgen
    Located in Brooklyn, NY
'The Stooble' is cross between a stool and a side table that is both functionally and aesthetically flexible. Like the other members of our 'Bond Series', the completely transparent acrylic Stooble is defined by the trough nestled underneath its surface. The trough enables you to curate your own sub-seat terrarium, or to display your own accents, oddities, and other objects of intrigue. Its transparent nature allows the piece to house accents that compliment its surrounding environment while also creating a sense of space. This aesthetic flexibility allows the table to synergize perfectly with almost any design project. To accommodate the more practical sitter who would prefer to use the piece's surface as a seat, we added an angled acrylic panel beneath the trough to serve as a conveniently-placed footrest. The 'Bond Series' is a line of acrylic furniture...

FEW WORDS FROM THE ARTIST: “I left on the surface of the object the imprints of my own fingers, of my hands, as well as the strikes and marks left by the actual tools used to shape the work. Later on, i took molds of my hands, fingers and of the tools that were actually used in the making of this unique piece, and duplicated them in cold cast bronze to complete the artistic statement.” For this set of works, the synthetic materials were chosen rationally in order to explain both the physical and conceptual materiality of the theme. Though, exactly the opposite for our case, the common perception of any synthetic material is usually disposable, mass-produces and low-grad. This gives birth to a discussion about the ethical value of synthetic materials and man’s ability to perceive it culturally. The story of the transformation of matter into an object, about the transformation of the object into a good, about the monetization of the good. PLASTIC CONCEPT: From the oldest of times, our species has experienced a strong symbiosis with matter. Humans have learned to model matter, turned it into tools, and then used it to create objects. The man of the 21st century has shaped the Anthropocene era to his liking; and plasticized it to his own mirror. The project called materiality, is centered around the last geological era, popularly known as the plastic age...
